The origin of this plant
The prickly pear cactus originates from the highlands of Mexico. The Aztecs considered it their symbol. It seems that the name prickly pear was born thanks to Christopher Columbus who, unaware of the discovery of the American continent, believed he was in India.
The fruit arrived in Europe with the Spaniards in the mid-1500s and in the milder areas of the Mediterranean it spread with incredible speed, quickly becoming a distinctive plant of the regions of southern Italy.
