Many do not know that the Sicilian blood orange can be multiplied by cutting!
This means that everyone with very little effort can generate one or more seedlings from a sprig of orange that will one day produce the citrus fruits we love so much.
But arm yourself with patience because once you have obtained the multiplication of the tree you will have to wait several years before you see the fruits!
The cutting of the Sicilian blood orange
Let's start by saying that the best time for the cuttings of this plant, but it is true for almost all citrus fruits, is from March to the end of summer. It begins....
Take a fresh branch, just over 20 centimeters, and let's start from the part where the apical bud of the future branch was. Here make an inclined cut of about one centimeter so that the dew drops can slide downwards. This practice will prevent that without creating problems for the future plan.
You will cut all the leaves present and in the lower part, the one that will be buried, you will remove the bark for about one centimeter. At this point you will have a branch of 15 centimeters, without leaves, with the apical part cut obliquely and the part to bury with the last centimeter without its bark.
We are almost ready to bury the sprig of the future orange
We take the sprig and immerse it in a glass of water for a few minutes, then "bread" the part that will be buried with root for cuttings. Prepare the earth in a jar (the earth for acidophilic plants), wet it abundantly and make a hole where you will insert the sprig prepared previously. You are almost done!
Insert the branch into the hole and press the earth. Now create the "microclimate" where the new plant will take root. Pack the plant in a transparent bag, the one used to freeze food, close and move the jar to an illuminated area but without the sun's rays hitting it directly.
Two months after the Sicilian blood orange seedling ....
Open the bag and you will be surprised to see the new orange leaves, a sign that the new plant begins to live on its own and one day will produce the Sicilian blood orange!
