Prickly pears, the most popular fruits of autumn

The prickly pears are the fruit of a plant belonging to the same family as the cactus. The thorns could, apparently, cause a sense of repulsion. However, its fruits are succulent and satisfying.

I read an aphorism about this plant "Life is like the prickly pear, if you don't get the thorns first you can't get to the pulp" .... Very true !!!

The fruits of this plant appear as a "closed fist" crowned with thorns, removing them is not difficult and the reward will be guaranteed. The prickly pear is a fat plain that reaches 3 meters in height and sometimes exceeds them. Too many precautions are not necessary for the cultivation of this plant which can grow even in areas poor in water and land. It is not uncommon to see in Sicily, on the roofs of houses, a prickly pear shovel growing on the eaves. In fact, the volcanic ash that falls on the roof is partially deposited on the roof drainage channel, is sufficient for the growth of this plant!

Our farm, as we have already written, produces the famous Sicilian blood oranges, extra virgin olive oil but also prickly pears.

We export these special fruits all over Europe and thanks to a widespread distribution network, in a very short time they pass from the plant to the final consumer. During the production process the prickly pears are washed and removed from their thorns. We then move on to packaging and shipping to your tables.

Let's now pass to the nutritional characteristics of this fruit.

The prickly pear is a fruit that provides a fair amount of fructose (simple carbohydrate) and good portions of fiber, mineral salts and vitamins.

In particular, prickly pears contain excellent quantities of viscous fiber, useful for regulating intestinal absorption and fecal transit itself. The contribution of potassium and antioxidants make it a perfect fruit at any age. For each 100g. of food are present:
